Rugby @ St Mary's
Both the year 7 and year 8 boy’s rugby league teams made it to the quarter finals of the North West Counties Cup last week. The year 8’s faced Wade Deacon away in a thrilling contest. After only 4 minutes the lads found themselves 16 points behind, but they showed great determination to get themselves back in the game. Flynn T showed fantastic strength and power to go the full length of the field.
This gave everyone confidence and the team went from strength to strength. Tries from Flynn again and Ben T put the team in the lead. Jack F from year 7 played the full match and made a try saving tackle! A fantastic achievement from someone in the year below. Adam T also had his best performance in a St Mary’s shirt. The game finished 34-28.
The year 7’s faced Bridgewater away from home in their quarter final. The team showed fantastic defensive skills against a well organised attacking side. Jack F and Jack P attempted to control the game from 6 and 7. Ben P, Cai O’B and Hayden G all took strong drives forward. However we were unable to keep Bridgewater out as they scored just before half time. We grew into the game during the second half and scored through a good team set. However, soon after, Bridgewater scored tries in quick succession to put the game past St Mary’s.
We have also been lucky enough to have past super league star Micky Higham teaching students lessons over the past two weeks. He has been working with Mr Newton’s GCSE year 9 class, Mr Horman’s GCSE year 9 class, Mrs Collins year 8 class and Mr Buchanan’s year 10 GCSE class.
Rugby training continues for both boys and girls all year groups on Tuesdays after school 3.00-4.00pm. Please see Mr Newton for any more details.
