Natalie Panagarry – Netball Coaching
On Friday 3rd March pupils from St Mary’s Catholic High School were treated to a netball coaching session from England and Loughborough Lightening’s Natalie Panagarry, who kindly took time out of her busy schedule to provide students with this exciting and unique opportunity. Panagarry spent time discussing her success in netball with the students and explained the pathway she had taken to reach international level.
During the sessions Panagarry took students through activation and landing skills, replicated directly from her England training programme. After this students had the opportunity to practice ball-handling skills through a series of progressive drills.
As well as participation opportunities some Key Stage 4 students, who are actively involved in coaching younger teams at the school, were afforded the chance to observe Panagarry’s coaching methods and ask questions in order to further improve their own practice. Olivia Jennings, one of the student leaders said, “not everybody gets to train with an England international. It will help me improve my overall game”.
Additionally, the Year 11 netball team were presented with their Wigan and Leigh Schools League Winners medals by Panagarry before she kindly gave the school an England women senior squad signed playing shirt to remember her visit by. The students all thoroughly enjoyed the experience, one pupil described the afternoon as “the best training session we’ve had during our time at St Mary's". The Physical Education staff hope this experience will help students improve their game in the future and perhaps even inspire them to follow in Panagarry’s footsteps.
