MFL Barcelona Trip 2016
October half-term saw the annual Barcelona trip leave, with almost 80 Year 10 students taking part in this fantastic trip. After an early alarm, the coaches were ready to leave at 5am on the dot, and the 25 hour trip to Spain began.
At just before 9am Saturday morning, the coaches arrived in Calella, to be greeted by a dull and rainy Spanish morning; the first time this had happened in all the years Mr. Lloyd has been taking this trip! After checking into the hotel, students were able to spend the day exploring the town. By lunch time the rain had cleared and the sun was out prompting a teacher v student game of volleyball which was, of course, won in dramatic style by the staff, Mr. Durrant, Mr. Peachey, Mr. Hodson and Mr. Haste. In the evening we went to the local hired venue, Beach Boys, where we were able to take part in an X-factor style karaoke evening, play pool and catch up on English television.
Rested and raring to go, on Sunday morning we headed into Barcelona to take in some of the amazing sights. The Nou Camp proved a popular trip with students commenting on the sheer size of the stadium and the amount of silverware displayed in the museum. We then headed to Port Vell where we were able to have lunch and look around the shops with a visit to the beach thrown in. Unfortunately for Mr. Hodson this also meant getting stung by a jellyfish! We then headed back to get ready for quiz night at Beach Boys. The carefully selected teams added a competitive streak to the evening, but a great night was had by all.
Another early alarm on Monday and we were off to Barcelona Zoo, followed by a visit to La Sagrada Familia. We were then able to practise speaking Spanish with a trip to Las Ramblas where we could all buy souvenirs and have a bite to eat under the Spanish sun. As we returned to the hotel the competition had already begun, with the atmosphere so tense it could be cut by a knife. The games night was fast approaching and the Boys v Girls teams were already exchanging heated conversation. After a variety of activities, such as Mr. Hodson being fed 4 yoghurts simultaneously and Mr. Haste having a rap-off with Mr. Peachey’s version of Barbie Girl, the girls’ team was victorious and won the prize of early entry into the theme park. The sense of injustice resonated in the boys’ camp; however the points cannot lie!
The final day saw us all head to Port Aventura, which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We were able to get on all rides and we even bumped in to Mr. Glennon who was there enjoying his half-term! In the evening the school-famous fancy dress evening provided entertainment in itself, with costumes ranging from sumo wrestlers, cheerleaders, to Baywatch icons and many more. It was a perfect way to end a fantastic trip.
We returned to school on Thursday, all tired but buzzing after such an amazing trip. It will certainly provide memories for years to come. Thank you to Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Peachey, Mr. Hodson, Mr Haste, Miss Cantero, Mrs. Brown and Miss Hilton for giving up their half-term and to Miss De Boer for organising the trip. We are looking forward to next year already!
