October half-term saw the annual trip to Barcelona leave with 76 Year 10 Spanish students. An early 5am start was in order and the coaches departed for the long 24 hour trip to Spain. We arrived the next day at 9am in Calella to glorious sunshine and hot weather. When finally checked in to the hotel and after unpacking and changing, we all had free time to spend on the beach under the Spanish sun.
We played volleyball, paddled in the sea and some of us just decided to catch up on sleep lying on the sand. The first evening we had the opportunity to play bowling and mini-golf and then, we went to Beach Boys – the hired venue we have every year for evening entertainment, where we were able to play pool, sing karaoke and watch the X factor!
After catching up on some much needed sleep, on Sunday morning we headed into Barcelona for sightseeing. The Nou Camp, where Barcelona FC play their matches, really was incredible in size and their trophy room was impressive. After a group photo and a quick stop in the souvenir shop we headed to Port Vell. A few free hours allowed us to buy some lunch and have a look round the shops before quiz night at Beach Boys. Teams were chosen carefully as there was a cash prize up for grabs! The Spanish grammar round proved to be the decider and the best team won some Euros to spend on their trip.
Monday was zoo day and shopping on the Ramblas. We were able to practise speaking Spanish and completely immerse ourselves in the Spanish culture that is everywhere on this beautiful and famous street of Barcelona. We all bought souvenirs and it really brought the study of Spanish to life seeing things we studied in Year 9 such as seeing the Sagrada Familia Cathedral and other famous monuments. Games night was on Monday evening. This involved boys going up against girls to win early entry to the theme park! The games involved Miss Dawson being fed yoghurt blindfolded by Lauren Furey, Mr Saunders and Miss De Boer going head to head in an X factor sing off and much more.
The final day we went to Port Aventura theme park and the rides there can only be described as amazing! The queues were short so we had lots of time there. The famous Fancy Dress Halloween Night was the evening’s entertainment. Everyone got dressed up ranging from Mario, sumo wrestlers, 118 girls, cheer leaders and many more. Everyone got involved in karaoke and dancing and it really was the ideal way to end such an action packed and fun filled trip to Spain.
We arrived back to school on the Thursday all very tired but filled with amazing memories and experiences that I am sure we will talk about for years to come. Thank you to all the teachers that made this trip possible and made it so much fun. ¡Muchas Gracias!
