St. Mary's Catholic High School

High Attaining Pupils at St Mary’s are supported in all subjects and areas of school and college life. This includes a coordinator (Miss Boardman) in place to track progress and support the well-being of these students. It is important that students engage fully with opportunities to extend their learning. We have high aspirations for our students and to inspire and support learning there is a variety of clubs and enrichment within all subject areas, some of these currently include:

 

English – Extensive enrichment programme of theatre trips, visiting authors and Creative writing group, with some students taking the As level in year 10.

Mathematics – participation in UK Maths Challenge, HAP KS2-3 transition clubs

Science – Science Club at lunch and STEM club after school, talks from external speakers, internal competitions and workshops such as introduction to astronomy in the planetarium, many educational trips to lectures and the Big Bang Fair. Students can also become science leaders supporting in primary schools.

Geography – participation in Field trips, EcoSchools, World Explorers Club, specific revision sessions at GCSE for High Attaining Pupils

History – various educational visits to the Imperial War Museum, Liverpool Slavery Museum, specific intervention classes for KS3 and 4 students

MFL – Master classes to support controlled assessment, and the development of reading and listening skills, Linguastars at KS3, a range of foreign visits including Paris, Barcelona and Madrid

Design & Technology – After school master classes to support controlled assessment, talks which allows students to build in more complex theory into their portfolios. Inspirational and motivational talks from industry and HE providers. 

ICT and Computing – Coding for Girls

Music – involvement in county orchestras, ensembles and choirs, involvement of singers in multi-school workshops and performances e.g. Let’s Sing.  Christmas and Summer concerts

Art & Design – Artist in Residence, visits to Liverpool Tate, exploring more challenging media, working on a larger scale, exploring artists in more depth

Drama – theatre trips, drama performance opportunities in School productions, Easter assemblies

PE – students are stretched in their individual sports and sporting opportunities to match ability

Media Studies – various Educational visits

Health and Social Care - Placements at 6th Form in Nurseries, Primary Schools, Care Homes and CAB office

Child Development - Virtual 'Bump' project and Virtual Baby project

Other opportunities

In addition to subject specific opportunities, high attaining students should aim to be involved in the some of the following enrichment activities to develop their leadership skills and other skills:

  • Take part in the Tenner Challenge in Key Stage 3
  • Join the student forum as a class rep
  • Be a student leader in Y11
  • Take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
  • Participate in school drama productions
  • Attend trips and lectures 
  • Be a student leader representing a subject at special events e.g. School Open Day and Parents’ Evenings
  • Involvement in House activities e.g. KS4 House Captain, fund raising and organising

Key Stage 5 HAP Support

  • Students are invited to join Cambridge HE+ scheme. 
  • Students are supported with applications to summer schools e.g. Oxford University UNIQ programme
  • All students have access to an individual UCAS tutor to provide support with all aspects of university application, including personal statement.
  • Intensive support is offered to students that are offered an interview, including Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science applicants
