Dear Parent/Guardian,

After last year’s success, St Mary’s are offering the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze certificate to all Year 9 students.  The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is the world’s leading achievement award for young people and is highly regarded by universities, colleges and employers. It encourages young people to develop independence, commitment, leadership and teamwork through being involved in a personalised programme of activities. The school fully supports the award and recognises its value for developing skills in young people and how it gives them the competive edge for the future.

The award is split into four sections; Volunteering, Physical, Skill and Expedition. It takes approximately 6 months to complete and requires regular commitment to various activities. Your son/daughter will need to find ways to fulfil the Volunteering, Physical and Skill sections of the award, whilst in school we will focus on the Expedition section.  Our school’s extra-curricular activities can also be counted towards the award and a comprehensive list of what we offer is now live on our school website.

The total cost of the Bronze award will be £285 and will support the pupils being away for 5 days split across the training and practice expeditions. This cost will cover the students’ training, instructors, travel, staffing and both the expedition elements.  Students will firstly be taken on a practice expedition from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th June 2020, which will consist of two overnight stays.  Students will then complete their final assessed expedition on the Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July 2020, which will be one overnight stay.  For the expedition elements students will be expected to provide a sleeping bag, waterproof jacket/trousers and an inexpensive pair of walking boots.  Many outdoor retailers offer a special discount to students registered with the Duke of Edinburgh and a list will be provided after registration. More details of the expedition elements can be found at www.samsykesltd.co.uk and general information about the Duke of Edinburgh Award can be found at www.dofe.org

We are obliged to state that a place on the trip is dependent on the continued exemplary behaviour of your child. Incidences of misbehaviour may result in the withdrawal of the offer of a place.

Please be aware that once the first instalment has been accepted it is non refundable. As the expedition elements are outsourced, if a pupils decides not to continue with the award parents/guardians will still be charged the full amount.
