Technology Department

The Design and Technology department has fully embraced the mission statement of the school by providing a curriculum and learning environment that ensures every student fulfills their potential.

The department has recently benefited from major investment and now has some excellent facilities. It has a brand new Food Technology room, a Graphics studio, a state of the art Computer/Electronics suite, a Product Design area, a Construction room and an Engineering room.

The experienced and caring staff within the department offer extensive extra-curricular activities where students of all abilities are given the opportunity to enhance and extend their experiences further.

Learning Programmes

All students in Key Stage 3 will be issued with a new A4 exercise book each Learning Programme (Term). This clearly outlines week-by-week the curriculum content both in class and at home. There are 3 Learning Programmes in total LP1 (September to Christmas) LP2 (January to Easter) LP3 (Easter to July).

Drama, Music and PE are working with Learning Journals throughout Key Stage 3.

All students in Key Stage 4 will be issued with a new A4 exercise book each Learning Programme (Term) or Unit (Relating to the Qualification being studied).

There are no Learning Programmes for Key Stage 5 subjects. The Curriculum Overview for each course can be found in the Year 12 and Year 13 tabs.

All Learning Programmes will be displayed on the first page of all exercise books. Each Learning Programme can found in the separate tab for each Year Group.


In Design and Technology pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

Learners at Key Stage 3 have one hour per week of Technology. Topics they study include:

  • Food Technology including the License to Cook certificate
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Systems and Control and Electronics
  • Designing and Making products of value

In Key Stage 4 learners can follow a range of pathways and courses.

The department offers AQA GCSE subjects in:

  • Catering
  • Graphic Products
  • Product Design

It also offers Edexcel Level 2 BTECs in Construction and Engineering.

In 2014, Level 3 Btec Engineering, Construction, and AS Product Design results were excellent. 73.7% of GCSE Graphic products students achieved an A*-C, improving on last year.

At key stage 3, there has been a continued narrowing of the gender gap in relation to Level 6 achievement.

In Key Stage 5 learners can build upon their success in Key Stage 4 by following a Level 3 course in Product Design, Construction and/or Engineering. These courses provide an excellent platform for entry to university and ultimately a professional career in Design, Construction or Engineering.
