Business Studies Department

We are currently reviewing our curriculum and new details will be published shortly.

The Business department at St Mary’s Catholic High School and Sixth Form offers an exciting and rewarding addition to the curriculum. Staff are committed to delivering high quality, engaging, stretching and relevant lessons that will maximise the potential of every individual. Students appreciate the value of business education as they understand that in the future they will be part of a workplace that is changing at an exponential rate.

Skills developed are both subject specific and transferrable, whilst knowledge gained ranges from economic policy to motivational initiatives. Students have the opportunity to study business at KS4 and KS5 and economics at KS5.

The department offers a range of extra- curricular opportunities that serve to widen and deepen the understanding that students have of the real world.

Yr 9/10/11- Student Investor/ visiting speakers/ Cadbury World visit

Yr 12/13- Student Investor/ Industry visits/ visiting speakers/ University of Manchester Stock Market Challenge/ New York

Cross- curricular- Oxbridge visit/ New York

Many students study either business or economics between Yr 9 and Yr 13, most notably there is a significant uptake in sixth form. Year on year the demand for these subjects has increased. The rise in popularity can be attributed to many factors including excellent KS 5 results, the importance of these subjects in the real world context, the skills and knowledge that are developed throughout the courses and the fact that the content that is covered in economics and business can be applied to many other courses including: geography, history, maths, sport, psychology and technology, to name but a few.
